Haiti, projects to rebuild lives

HAITI.JPGIn the aftermath of the 12 January earthquake, France has decided to scale up its aid to Haiti by cancelling the bilateral debt – €56M – and allocating €100M of additional aid for reconstruction in 2010 and 2011, including €40M to finance the budget expenditure of the Haitian State. €5M have already been disbursed and €15M will be disbursed by September 2010.

In order to help address the difficult situation of populations, AFD also allocated €6M in May 2010 to finance urban projects in Gonaïves and Cap-Haïtien. In addition, it has sent several missions to prepare operations to rehabilitate the State University Hospital in Port-au-Prince and rebuild precarious neighborhoods in the capital. The corresponding financing is expected to be approved in the autumn of 2010. AFD has been present in Haiti since 1976 and finances a number of projects in the sectors of water and sanitation, agriculture, education, health and microfinance.
